Lives In: San Francisco, CA
About Me: I’m founder of Sugarcane, a line of girls’ clothing made with artisan woven textiles. Sugarcane started by chance. After I had my daughter Amelia, I left my marketing executive position at a Fortune 500 company to be her primary caretaker. When she was five months old, we traveled to Asia for holiday and to visit with family. That was when I discovered the hand loomed textiles of the Philippines and how each region specializes in its own weaves, patterns, and materials. The weavers are mothers and grandmothers supporting their families, and their stories resonated with me as a new mom. It is a vanishing art form, but we can make a difference in that. I had always wanted to start my own company but I never knew what it would be until then.
Hire Me For/I'm Good At: Creative direction, Styling, Textile trips to the Philippines
Interested In: Collaboration, Sponsorship, Mentorship, Design partnership. I’m a collaborator at heart. I enjoy working with people and seeing their process. I would love to co-design a capsule collection using my hand loomed textiles or co-style a lookbook.
Mama Likes: Family, travel, family travel--like with my mom and siblings, their spouses and kids. We roll deep. I love food, reading, DIY, flowers, mani pedis, and a good closet cleanout. Flea markets in Japan are next level. I could go on.
Business mamas who inspire me: My grandmother Salud, who passed her love of textiles to me and was a natural businesswoman, Sheryl Sandberg, Jenna Lyons, and all the heymamas making it happen every day!
Brands that most reflect your style or that you’d want to work with: I’d like to work with Ace and Jig and Blockshop Textiles to learn from each other and share. I admire them for owning their processes from start to finish.
Words you live by/quotes you love: There’s room for everyone.
Best advice you’ve ever been given: Trust my instincts and stick with it. Successful people are the ones who’ve stuck with it longer than anyone else.
Best advice you’d give to someone starting out: Be bold.
What are three things people would be surprised to know about you?
1. I use a non-digital paper planner and handwrite all my appointments and lists with an actual pen.
2. I co-own a café and juice bar @hillsidecafePH.
3. I used to speak, read and write in German. I studied it for seven years and even wrote college essays auf Deutsch. Admittedly it is rusty these days.
