Name: Misasha Graham
Company: barre3 San Carlos
Lives In: San Carlos, CA 94070 USA
About Me : I'm a reformed intellectual property litigator who left big law after my second son was born and followed my true passion of wellness to open barre3 San Carlos in my city of San Carlos, CA exactly one year ago today. I grew up the daughter of an immigrant father from Japan and a white mother from Seattle and spent summers in Tokyo getting to know my relatives (yes, I speak, read and write Japanese). I married a black man from Louisiana and have two very mixed race sons, ages 4 and 2.5, who are the center of my world. I recently turned 40 and have loved the freedom that that gives me, and am looking to grow my business - and my personal relationships - in 2017.
What are your skills?: Influencer, Writing
Where did you go to school?: I got my A.B. from Harvard and my J.D. from Columbia Law School.
Interested in: Business, Collaboration, Sponsorship, Mentorship, Mentoring, Friendship, Play dates, Networking, Inspiration
Personal passions, charities or hobbies you love?: I clearly love barre fitness, as I made that my full time business. I love traveling and can't wait until my kids are a little older to take them around the world. Right now I am a big supporter of any charity that promotes social justice - the ACLU, Southern Poverty Law Center, etc. I firmly believe in diversity and the fact that everybody matters - I have spent my adult life and some of my earlier life fighting for that - and so I have focused professionally on promoting that as well. This year the studio is partnering with organizations like Black Girls Code to get involved in their summer health initiative and support diverse women in various fields.
Why do you want to be a part of heymama?: I've been looking for a community of women who are creative and entrepreneurial, as it can be very lonely being the owner and CEO of your business! I would also love to connect with moms who are in a similar phase of life and business, and learn from those who have forged this path already. In times like these, we need community and strength in numbers more than ever, and it's one of my personal goals in 2017 to build that community stronger and more diverse than ever before.
What are your brand goals for this year?: As we are now in our second year of operations, I want to be known as the premiere fitness destination in my area of the Peninsula. I want to expand our retail offerings and continue to partner within the community to make barre3 a "must" in terms of daily life for people who are looking for inner and outer whole body health.
Words you live by/quotes you love?: "Everybody matters." "We rise by lifting others up." "Be the change you wish to see in the world." (Gandhi) "Despite everything, no one can dictate who you are to other people." (Prince)
What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?: One step at a time. And just breathe. That one especially comes in handy.
Name one thing that scares the shit out of you?: The thought of someone viewing my kids through the lens of racism or hate. It would crush me.
What is something that people would be surprised to know about you?: I'm actually somewhat introverted - I love reading and need that quiet to recharge. I spend a lot of my day talking to others, so I think that would be shocking too many (except my closest friends and my husband!).
What part of your business do you feel needs the most focus // support // love right now?: Differentiation in the market; social media could always be stronger as well.
If you could tell your 20-year-old self one thing, what would it be? : This too shall pass. Don't settle. You deserve better. (I guess that's three things, but all on the same theme....)
