Name: Carolyn Yian

About Me : I'm a mother of a 6-year old boy, Skyler, and spent 15 years in corporate America working in corporate strategy, marketing and consumer research roles. I had always succumbed to family pressure of pursuing a stable and "safe" career path. However, after the birth of my son, I realized I needed to take a risk and leave my corporate job to fill the creative void I'd had for years. I took a year "sabbatical" to do something completely different - I worked as an intern/assistant stylist for celebrity wardrobe stylists, driving to showrooms all over Los Angeles, schlepping wardrobe racks and boxes, steaming, making coffee, you name it! It was a humbling experience that gave me insight into how the fashion world operates.
I am now currently a freelance marketing strategy and consumer research consultant. For instance, I use consumer research in order to help brands understand who their core consumer is, or to help guide and define positioning for new brands. I also co-founded a kids t-shirt brand with my husband, aptly named Sultan Sky Tees (after my son, Skyler). We are Los Angeles-based and hope to grow our presence over the next few years.

Why do you want to be a part of heymama?: I love the idea of connecting with moms who are pursuing passions outside of motherhood (or passions that intersect with motherhood). We have such a strong connection already through the shared lens of motherhood. Going one step beyond the shared mom connection to shared dreams, career aspirations, personal development goals - that's what makes for a complete tribe. There are so many talented, creative, and kind moms out there I'd love to meet and/or collaborate with!
What are your brand goals for this year?: My brand goals for this year are to : 1) Grow awareness (for Sultan Sky Tees) and 2) Expand my roster of clients/brands to smaller sized businesses that need marketing strategy guidance.
Words you live by/quotes you love: "The days are long but the years are short" - as a mom I have to constantly remind myself to enjoy the small everyday moments. It's so easy to let the days fly by and before you know it, your toddler has become a big kid!
"Chance favors the mind that is prepared" - my 10th grade Biology teacher said this to us all the time and I've realized how true it is. You can't 100% control the outcomes of life's events, but you can do due diligence and prepare to the fullest (whether it's a big presentation, a new business venture pitch, etc.) to tip the scales in your favor.
Best advice you’ve ever been given?: Take time to celebrate small victories. We put so much pressure on ourselves to be the perfect mom or the perfect entrepreneur. In order to stay sane, we have to give ourselves credit for small wins, whether it's getting through an afternoon of errands with kids without a meltdown, or forging a new business relationship that could open more doors.
